Stop Running Major Scales ๐๐ป Practice This!
Nov 06, 2025This week’s video is all about giving your major chord playing a boost with three short, powerful etudes, each designed to bring scale vocabulary to life.
These mini etudes are built over tonic major (major 7) chords and are packed with essential jazz language: enclosures, arpeggios, bebop scale motion, and resolutions to the 3rd. Each one is only 3–4 measures long, but they’re full of ideas you can immediately use in your solos.
I’ll walk you through each etude in the key of F, then transpose them to a couple other keys, and finally break each line down into smaller fragments so you can clearly see how the language is constructed—and how to practice it.
These lines will:
- Help you move beyond just running scales
- Teach you classic bebop vocabulary
- Give you phrasing ideas that sound musical and grounded
- Build your understanding of how to apply vocabulary over a major chord
