💥 Level Up Your Jazz Solos With This One Scale!
May 21, 2025If you’ve spent time working on II V I progressions, especially in major keys, you’ve probably leaned on the dorian mode for your IIm7 lines. It’s a classic. But sometimes, the dorian scale can feel a little… too expected.
My newest video shows you a 6-note scale that gives your IIm7 lines a more focused, melodic sound—and sets you up for smoother resolutions into the V7 chord. I first learned this approach from the great David Hazeltine. This scale take out one note (the 6th) from the standard 7-note Dorian mode, but that small change makes a big difference, especially when you add some tasteful enclosures around the root and 3rd.
In the video, I...
- Teach you the scale starting from both the root and 3rd
- Show you how to add simple enclosures for melodic movement
- Play through a few 4 Bar II V I licks in multiple keys so you can hear it in action
It’s practical, sounds great, and fits right into your bebop vocabulary without being overly technical.
