When I first started learning jazz, I was always looking for the next thing that would unlock the music for me—a new scale, a new theory concept, or a new practice routine. Over time, I discovered that so much of jazz comes down to language. The musicians we admire didn't learn to improvise by simply memorizing theory; they learned by listening, internalizing, and imitating musical phrases until those phrases became part of their musical DNA. In this free workshop, I'll show you how a small collection of short, essential jazz licks can form the foundation for developing authentic jazz language, a stronger sense of swing and rhythm, confidence in every key, and greater freedom when you improvise.

I'll also show you ways to integrate these short phrases into tunes, combining licks with your own vocabulary, no matter what level you're at! These short phrases may seem simple, but they contain lessons that can benefit your playing for years to come. Whether you're just getting started or have been playing jazz for a long time, you'll leave with a clear understanding of how to practice vocabulary in a way that leads to real growth and a deeper connection to the music.
