FREE ONLINE TRAINING
Hosted by Tim Whalen, founder of Whalen Jazz Lessons
When I first started learning jazz, I was always looking for the next thing that would unlock the music for meāa new scale, a new theory concept, or a new practice routine. Over time, I discovered that so much of jazz comes down toĀ language. The musicians we admire didn't learn to improvise by simply memorizing theory; they learned by listening, internalizing, and imitating musical phrases until those phrases became part of their musical DNA. In this free workshop, I'll show you how a small collection of short, essential jazz licks can form theĀ foundationĀ for developingĀ authentic jazz language, a stronger senseĀ ofĀ swingĀ andĀ rhythm,Ā confidenceĀ inĀ every key, andĀ greater freedomĀ when you improvise.
I'll also show you ways to integrate these short phrases into tunes, combining licks with your own vocabulary, no matter what level you're at! These short phrases may seem simple, but they contain lessons that can benefit your playing for years to come. Whether you're just getting started or have been playing jazz for a long time, you'll leave with a clear understanding of how to practice vocabulary in a way that leads to real growth and a deeper connection to the music.
Iāve spent the past 25+ years helping jazz students, from total beginners to advanced players, deepen their understanding of jazz harmony, improvisation, and rhythm. If thereās one thing Iāve learned, itās that most players donāt needĀ moreĀ informationāthey need theĀ rightĀ information, delivered clearly and in manageable doses.
My approach is rooted in clarity, musicality, real-world application, and fun!
I'm looking forward to seeing you!
